What is Parenting Coordination?

In some cases, conflicts involving parenting continue to affect the family long after the original divorce or court action concludes.  Ongoing conflict is not only frustrating and stressful for the parties, but the exposure to conflict can have deep and negative impacts on the wellbeing of children.

The services of a Parenting Coordinator (“PC”) can be instrumental in helping the parties get prompt help with parenting disputes and avoid expensive litigation while reducing the overall level of conflict.  The main goal of parenting coordination services is to serve the children’s best interests, but typically the entire family will experience relief.  With the guidance of a PC, the parties and children should experience less conflict and a higher level of certainty in parenting issues, quicker decisions and improved conditions for positive problem-solving.

A PC is a mediator with special training and experience in handling high-conflict cases.  The PC facilitates decisions through communication and mediation and, where necessary, makes recommendations.  The goal of having a PC assigned to your case is to serve the children’s best interests while keeping the parties out of court, ultimately reducing conflict and expense.  After the initial meeting(s), the PC’s work is often done via email and telephone, which is far faster and less costly that court processes.

A court order and the consent of the parties is required to appoint a PC.  The services of the PC are paid for by the parties, based on the terms of their specific order.
