MICHIGAN CHILD SUPPORT FAQ #6: Does Child Support End When My Child Turns 18?

“Does Child Support End When My Child Turns 18?”

Yes and no.  Child support ends when your child turns 18, but can be ordered to continue after your child turns 18 (and up until your child is 19.5 years old) as long as all of the following apply:

1.    You child is attending high school on a full-time basis;

2.    There is a reasonable expectation that your child will graduate; and

3.    Your child lives full time with the recipient of the support or at an institution.

Additionally, if both parties agreed to include a provision in a Judgment or an Order that provides for child support after a child has turned 18, the provision is valid and enforceable by the Court.

(MCL 552.605(b)).
